What is the most insane part repair?
I used to believe it was replacing the starter on an ls400, but apparently to replace the wiper motor on a db9 you have to pull the engine. And the wiper motor is a common failure item.

I was going to replace the starter on my wife's old Jeep Liberty - 2005 Sport 4x4 with 3.7L V6.
then I found out I had to take out the front drive shaft to remove it and I said fuck that (thankfully it wasn't the starter, would've been a wasted effort anyhow)

Didn't you have to take out the entire dash?

I havent done one in 10 years, but I think I remember the dash and everything behind the firewall having to come out on those.

None. All just nuts and bolts. It's more to do with access to those nuts and bolts that lead to headaches so that perspective.... where do I begin lol :]

I don't know anything about the LS400, but I doubt it beats the northstar starter replacement.

Oil filter on a Jeep 3.7l v6. It's located as far up under the vehicle as possible, and guarded by numerous sharp things. It's also designed so that oil pours out all over the place as soon as you start unscrewing it.
Imagine sticking your hand in a tank full of cats and weedwhackers while somebody shines a laser pointer at your arm and dumps used motor oil all over your face. That's pretty much what it feels like.

Any rear engine seal. Part rarely cost more than $20 on almost any car ever made between 1930 and present.
But replacing one?

Insane?
How about a window switch for a Mercedes-Benz 600? $11,200

Oh don't worry, it's way deeper than you think.
(In all honesty though, it does make sense)

It's stuff like this that makes me marvel at how easy it is to work on the 3er's I've had.

Doesn't a heater core replacement on a Lotus Espirit require cutting the dash out and fibreglassing it back in? Nuts and bolts are great, things like that are not.

You need to get at something under the cowl in a 1964 to 1966 Mustang? Usually because it's rusted and leaks like a mofo? Yup, you're cutting and welding.

This is what it looks like when you have to replace your Audi R8's air conditioner compressor.
Yep. You pull the engine.
